Gymnastics Now a Varsity Sport

The Athletic Department is excited to announce that we will now have a varsity gymnastics team. The team will practice at The Elite Gymnastics Academy in Solon and will be coached by Melissa Gillen. Coach Gillen is a retired national level 10 gymnast who has been coaching for 20 years. She served as head coach of Gilmour’s club team last year and was the head coach at Solon High School for 10 years.

Last year’s club team had three members - Sophia Giancola ’20, Madeline Grobelny ’20 and Brinn MacLellan ’21. They hope to build on their success last year.

Some of the highlights included Sophia being named all-around champ at the All-School Catholic Cup as well as an All-State team member after her performance at states, where she finished 10th on the vault and 16th on the floor. Notably, it is quite difficult to qualify for states in gymnastics as there are no divisions, so the girls compete against all schools in the state regardless of the size of their team.

Any student interested in joining these young women on this year’s varsity team should contact Mr. O’Toole at otooles@gilmour.org.
