Baseball: Varsity Continues Its Winning Ways; DeMell Named NH Player of the Week

The varsity baseball team added four wins to its record this past week, improving its win streak to seven in a row. The Lancers defeated John F. Kennedy Catholic School in back-to-back North Coast Conference (NCL) games - 7-1 and 8-0. In the second win, Matt Christopher '20 (pictured on the right) provided an offensive spark with a grand slam. Gilmour went on to win against Division I Mayfield 15-5 before closing out the week with a 7-1 defeat of West Geauga in which Ben DeMell '21 (pictured on the left) struck out 13 batters in just five innings of work. For the week, DeMell struck out 20 in just over 11 innings of work and hit .615 with three RBI and seven runs scored to be named News-Herald Player of the Week.

In other baseball news, the junior varsity team fell short in two games earlier in the week before bouncing back with a win against West Geauga. Highlights of the week included a grand slam by Charlie Shepherd '21 and a home run by Marco Costabile '20.

The reserve team was able to win its first two games of the season with a 16-6 win against Cleveland Heights and a 12-2 win against West Geauga. The team got strong pitching performances from Nathan Flaherty '22 and Michael DiPuccio '22, as well as some nice hits by Andrew Mayer '22 and JD Fitzgerald '21.
