Playing on a Thursday night under the lights at nearby Hawken School, the Gilmour Academy varsity football team came ready to prove who ruled Gates Mills. After 48 minutes of outstanding effort, the Lancers walked away with an impressive 41-22 victory to improve to 2-2 on the season.

Mick Hopkins '22 was a standout on defense, leading the team with 12 tackles, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. Rocco Hice '23 totaled 12 tackles and 1.5 sacks, while Mitch Lamosek '21 had 11 tackles and 1.5 sacks.

Head coach Chris Kosiorek was also quick to point out another defensive highlight – the first career interception for Jake Kavcic '24.

On the offensive side, Santino Harper '23 led the team with 272 yards on 13 carries with two touchdowns. Thomas Richardson '22 (pictured) had 77 yards on 13 carries with one TD, while Andy Kavcic '24 totaled 25 yards on five carries and Tommy McCrone '23 had 20 yards on three carries. Richardson also passed for 226 yards with three touchdowns. McCrone had two receptions for 81 yards with one touchdown, while Charlie Shepherd '21 had 115 yards on two receptions with two touchdowns.

Richardson's offensive performance in the game led to him being selected as an Ohio Varsity Player of the Week.

"Thomas accounted for four of our scores in our victory over rival Hawken," said Kosiorek. "As a dual-threat QB, he has the ability to hurt a defense both in the air and on the ground."

Richardson's play this past week also earned him a nomination for the News-Herald's prestigious Tony Fisher Award, which is presented at the end of the season to the most outstanding player in the News-Herald coverage area.
