Lancers Rout Tigers, Win Second Straight

The Gilmour Academy varsity football team dominated from start to finish in claiming a 42-0 win over Warrensville Heights High School this past Saturday on a hot and steamy afternoon at Weber Stadium.

With the victory, the Lancers moved to 2-0 on the young season, twice winning in comfortable fashion.

After serving as the primary running back in the season opener, Andy Kavcic '24 took over quarterback duties against the Tigers. The sophomore did not disappoint as he threw four touchdown passes to four different receivers while also running for a score of his own.

The Gilmour defense was equally impressive as it allowed only six total yards while pitching a shutout. The Tigers accumulated negative 12 yards on 29 rushing attempts during the game. Rocco Hice '23 led the defensive effort with 15 tackles while both CJ Johnson '22 and Brady Pietruszka '24 each added six stops.

After forcing a Warrensville punt on the game's opening possession, Gilmour scored on its first drive just over three minutes into the game. Jake Kavcic '24 plunged in from one yard out on a quarterback keeper to give the Lancers the only points they would need.

Gilmour would double its lead about four minutes later when Andy Kavcic scrambled to his right, cut back and burst into the end zone with a 30-yard rush.

If there was any doubt that Gilmour was primed for a win after its quick start, it was quickly put to rest in the second quarter as Andy Kavcic threw for a trio of scores in the frame.

Kavcic first hit Dan Jevnikar '22 by lofting a 17-yard pass over the defense into the back of the end zone. Jevnikar did well to tip-toe his feet in the end zone before going out of bounds.

Andy then hit brother Jake with a screen pass that went the distance as the well-executed play went for 46 yards and a touchdown.

The Lancers capped off the quarter when Andy Kavcic hit Jesse Shepherd '23 with a 20-yard touchdown pass in which Shepherd made a leaping grab with a defender on his back.

Gilmour's significant lead ensured that the second half was played with a running clock, allowing the Lancers an opportunity to provide a number of their younger players with varsity action.

Gilmour would cap off the scoring in the third quarter with a 33-yard touchdown pass from Andy Kavcic to Tommy McCrone '23 as the receiver got behind defenders down the right sideline and hauled in a pass in stride.

Jake Kavcic led Gilmour on the ground with five rushes for 60 yards. Anders Sorensen '22 was a perfect 6-for-6 on extra points while Nick Speyer '24 recovered a fumble for the Lancers.

Earlier in the week, Gilmour's junior varsity team won its season opener in similar fashion. The Lancers took down Orange High School 42-0 to open their campaign on a high note.

Gilmour's varsity team will next host Hawken School as it plays the third game of a four-game homestand to open the season.
