Rocco Hice, Jake Kavcic Named All-Ohio

Rocco Hice '23 and Jake Kavcic '24 were both selected as All-Ohio honorees as 11 total Lancers from the varsity football program earned postseason recognition from various local organizations.

Hice and Kavcic both were named to the Division IV All-Ohio Teams by the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association. Kavcic earned a spot on the Second Team as a defensive back and Hice was a Third Team honoree at linebacker.

Hice was everywhere on defense for the Lancers, time and again putting an end to opposing offenses' plays. His 121 tackles easily led the team as he reached double figures in tackles in nine of the team's 10 games. Hice led Gilmour in tackles in eight games during the season. He also tied for the team lead in both tackles for loss (9.0) and sacks (5.0) and led the team with five quarterback hurries.

Kavcic ranked third on the team with 53 total tackles, tallying a season-high 12 against both Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin School and Lutheran High School East. His 21 solo stops put him second on the squad. Kavcic grabbed a team-high three interceptions for Gilmour and also added four pass breakups and two tackles for loss.

Both Hice and Kavcic had previously been named to the Northeast Lakes All-District First Team, two of the 11 GA players to be recognized as All-District.

Andy Kavcic '24 and Hunter Sebulsky '23 both were tabbed All-District Second Team at the Athlete and Offensive Line positions, respectively.

Andy Kavcic, like his brother Jake, contributed in nearly every area of the offense for Gilmour. He rushed 79 times for 458 yards and five touchdowns on the season, averaging 5.8 yards per carry. While filling in at quarterback, he completed 44-of-65 passes (67.7 percent) for 603 yards as he tossed eight TD passes against three interceptions. He also caught 15 passes for 207 yards and posted four receiving touchdowns.

Sebulsky was the anchor of Gilmour's offensive line that paved the way for a number of impressive offensive performances. The Lancers scored at least 35 points in six of their nine regular season games and averaged 31.5 points over the course of the season. Sebulsky and his teammates on the line helped Gilmour average nearly 160 rushing yards per game.

Seven other Lancers were named All-District Honorable Mention: Louka Babic '23, Mick Hopkins '22, Dan Jevnikar '22, CJ Johnson '22, Tommy McCrone '23, Sam Palumbo '22 and Anders Sorensen '22.

Babic, Johnson and Palumbo were recognized for their efforts along the offensive line where, in partnership with the aforementioned Sebulsky, they helped the Lancers light up the scoreboard with points.

Hopkins and Jevnikar both earned a spot at the linebacker position. Hopkins was second on the team with 57 tackles and tied for the team lead with nine tackles for loss. Jevnikar was fourth on the team with 44 stops on the season and posted two fumble recoveries and four pass breakups.

McCrone was selected as a defensive back while Sorensen earned a spot as a kicker.

McCrone led the team with five pass breakups and added an interception and a forced fumble. Sorensen made 33-of-38 extra point attempts on the season, including a perfect 6-for-6 effort in a win against Warrensville Heights High School.

Seven Lancers also were recognized on the News Herald All-Star Teams, which, unlike the All-District Teams, are not separated by division.

Jake Kavcic earned a spot on the Second Team offense while Hice claimed a spot on the Second Team defense. Andy Kavcic claimed a Third Team spot on offense. Four Lancers earned Honorable Mention status from the News Herald: Hopkins, Johnson, McCrone and Sebulsky.

One noteworthy item is that Jake Kavcic, an all-state performer on defense, was recognized for his offensive exploits by the News Herald.

Jake Kavcic led the team in rushing yards (568), rushing touchdowns (12), passing completions (55), passing yards (668) and total points accumulated (94). He averaged a team-best 6.6 yards per carry, threw eight touchdown passes and caught 15 passes for 280 yards and five receiving touchdowns. In a win over Lutheran East, Kavcic ran 11 times for 155 yards and an amazing six touchdowns.

Only two of Gilmour's seven News Herald honorees are set to graduate this coming spring, and both of GA's All-Ohio award winners are slated to return for the 2022 season.
