It was no joke as heavy snow cancelled the varsity boys lacrosse team's season opener scheduled on April 1. But two days later, the Lancers were back in action as they hosted North Coast League (NCL) foe Benedictine in what was expected to be an exciting matchup. The rivals went into overtime a year ago, with Gilmour finishing on the losing end, 7-6. This season's game was much different as the Lancers came out on fire to the finish, winning 10-1. Goalie Kessel Richards '21(pictured on the left) saw only seven shots, stopping six. GA's close defense of Trey Stein '19 (pictured on the right) (six ground balls), Josh Miavitz '20 (five ground balls) and Bryce Hofstrom '20 (three ground balls) were a big reason why Richards' day was uneventful. Midfielder Cisco Martinez '19 led the scoring with a hat trick that also included three assists. Midfielder Robby Belknap '20 (three goals), attackman Lee Sullivan '19 (two goals), attackman Tate Simpson '21 (one goal, one assist) and attackman Jesse Galassi '19 (one goal, one assist) were responsible for the rest of the Lancer offense.

Gilmour then traveled to take on the winless Berea-Midpark Titans at Lou Groza Field late last week. Again, the GA defense was stifling, only allowing five shots on goal. Richards made great stops in the net, including one tough one off his collarbone, to preserve the shutout. GA totaled 47 shots, including 19 in the third quarter. Galassi led the way with three goals and three assists. Martinez (three goals, one assist), Sullivan (one goal, two assists), Simpson (two goals), Stein (one goal), midfielder Max Mendels '19 (one goal, one assist) and long-stick midfielder Nick Kolar '21 (one goal) all contributed to a balanced scoring effort. Mendels was all over the field scooping up a team-high seven groundballs, playing great on-ball defense and being an essential part of Gilmour's clearing game.

With two wins in the books, the Lancers are looking forward to more competition next week from Lake Catholic and Brecksville-Broadview Heights. Both games will be in Lancer territory.
