Cross Country: All Lancers Post Notable Times at Cardinal Classic

his past weekend, the Lancer cross country program took to the course at the Mentor Cardinal Classic held at Garfield Park and came away with a strong showing in a tough field.

The girls ran first and came in 13th of 22 in a field dominated by some of the best Division I and Division II teams in the state. Running short-handed due to illness and injury, each Lancer posted a career- or season-best time. Kaitlin Rulison '23 led the charge in 35th place in 20:55, followed closely by Mary Lombardo '22 (pictured on the right), who crossed the line in 37th in a time of 20:57. The back half of the Lancer pack displayed excellent team running with Ava Moe '22 (74th in 22:05), Jorja Hlifka '20 (76thin 22:09) and Mia Polisena '22 (78th in 22:20) navigating a crowded field of some of the area's best individuals.

The boys ran next and came away with 16th place out of 24 schools, including four teams ranked in the top 20 of Division I. Like the girls, the boys all posted season- or career-best times. For the second consecutive week, the senior tandem of Bryson Simpson '20 (46th in 17:29) and Cole Durdella '20 (pictured on the left) (57th in 17:45) led the way. Will Kay '23 placed 121st in 19:57, just ahead of Garret Tomasek '20, who was 122nd in 19:57. Everett Hunter '21 (140th in 21:13) rounded out the scoring for the Lancers, who were the top-placing Division III team in the field.
