Gilmour Cruises to Season-Opening Wins

The Gilmour Academy girls varsity basketball team cruised to wins in each of its first two games this season as the Lancers played a pair of games on either side of Thanksgiving.

The Lancers began the season with a 66-13 victory at home over Padua Franciscan High School before registering a 71-39 victory at Euclid High School.

Gilmour's strong defense, aided by its press, helped the Lancers convert turnovers into points on many occasions through the opening two games. GA also utilized a balanced scoring attack in each of its opening two wins, making it hard for the opposition to key in on a single player or two.

Angelina Lonardo '22 led the Lancers in the opener against Padua with 13 points, tied for the team high, as she shot 6-of-9 from the field. She also led the team with four assists, without committing a turnover, and tied for the team high with four rebounds while adding a trio of steals.

Katie Puletti '24 matched Lonardo's 13 points, as she hit a pair of three-pointers, and also tallied four steals.

Lauryn Stover '22, who signed her National Letter of Intent to play at Purdue University Fort Wayne about a week prior to the opener, notched 10 points, four rebounds, four steals and a team-high three blocks.

Nicci Finazzo '24 made all four shots she attempted from the field to finish with nine points. She also added six steals, three assists and a pair of blocks.

Madeline Martino '22 added seven points, three rebounds and four steals in the win while Grace Terranova '22 tied for the team high with six steals and grabbed three boards.

Gilmour racked up an incredible 31 steals in the victory over Padua.

The Lancers' road-opening win at Euclid was only slightly closer than the game prior as Gilmour was still comfortably in the lead for much of the game.

Stover was GA's leading scorer at Euclid as she finished with 13 points, seven rebounds, three steals and a block.

Puletti joined Stover in reaching double figures in each of the opening two games. She had a highly efficient effort from the field, missing only one shot, as she notched 12 points along with six rebounds and three assists.

Finazzo did not miss a shot for the second straight game as her 5-for-5 performance gave her 10 points. She added three assists, without a turnover, along with a team-high four steals.

Martino finished with nine points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Molly Moore '23 posted a team-high eight rebounds along with seven points and a block.

Terranova contributed a team-best five thefts along with four points and three steals while Giana Lonardo '22 had seven points, three rebounds and two steals.

Gilmour's junior varsity team also won its opening two games without too much difficulty. The Lancers defeated Padua 56-18 and Euclid 54-35.

In the win over Padua, Elaina Kline-Ruminski '25 had a game-high 21 points while Kelsey O'Toole '24 was right behind with 18.

Tia Shaw '25 led the Lancers with 20 points in the win at Euclid while O'Toole was again second on the team, this time tallying 14.
