The girls prep hockey team traveled to Chicago, for a two-game series against Team Illinois 19U this past weekend. Even with the Gilmour roster depleted due to injuries, the Lancers worked hard to earn a difficult 2-2 tie. Team Illinois went up 1-0 in the second period, but defenseman Quinn Hartmetz '21 quickly responded by going end-to-end with the puck and burying a beautiful goal to even out the score. Gilmour then went up 2-1 at the end of the second period after a stunning shot from the point by Delaney Mayer '20 off of a quick faceoff play. In the third period, the Lancers took a penalty and Team Illinois quickly capitalized on its advantage to tie the game. Kristiana Apsite PG was absolutely brilliant in net, as the Lancers were outshot the entire game. Her sprawling saves tight around the net kept the game close.

On Sunday, the Lancers and Team Illinois met up for round two. This time, the Lancers kept the game tight again, as the score remained knotted at one headed into the second period after a brilliant goal by Jenna Salminen '20 off of a rush. Unfortunately, as Gilmour trailed 2-1 into the third period, fatigue and injuries set in and the Lancers lost by a score of 5-1.

The Gilmour Gladiators 16U team also traveled west to Toledo and Chicago for a total of four games this past weekend. On Saturday, the Gladiators defeated the Grand Rapids Griffins 7-4, and the Chicago Fury 7-0. The shutout in the second game went to Alayna Breivogel '21. On Sunday, the 16U team faced Team Illinois 16U in a double-header. Alaina Giampietro '22 and Julija Blazinsek '21 scored in both games. In the second game, the Gladiators were down 2-1 with under a minute to play. They pulled their goalie for an extra attacker and capitalized on a 6-4 power play, with Giampietro scoring to tie the game in the final seconds. It was a very exciting ending against a strong team from Chicago.

In other hockey news, Aitana Garcia Reynell '20 (player pictured in blue) returned to campus this week after a weeklong hiatus during which she was a member of Team Spain, competing in the inaugural IIHF Women's U18 World Championships in Mexico City. Team Spain was crowned champions in the Division II Group B level. Reynell not only earned a gold medal, but was also named Most Valuable Player in the gold medal game against Turkey.
