Lancers Win Twice During Wintry Week

Lancers Win Twice During Wintry Week

In a week in which the Lancers had two games canceled due to snow, the Gilmour Academy varsity baseball team still managed to post a pair of wins.

Gilmour began last week with a 6-2 victory over Willoughby South High School.

RBI doubles by Ben DeMell '21 and Michael DiPuccio '22 had Gilmour tied 2-2 after three innings of action.

The score was still tied with two outs and no one on in the bottom of the fifth. Jesse Shepherd '23 worked a full-count walk and then proceeded to steal second base. After he stole second, DeMell was intentionally walked.

Charlie Shepherd '21 delivered the best possible response to the intentional free pass as he followed with a three-run homer to give the Lancers the lead.

The Lancers would add an insurance run in the sixth when Jesse Shepherd's RBI single to left brought home Vinny Bandwen '21, who had started the frame with a single to center.

Gilmour would hold onto its four-run lead in the seventh to claim the win.

DeMell earned the victory on the mound as he went the opening six innings. He allowed just two hits while striking out 11 batters. Will Kay '23 struck out two of the four batters he faced in a scoreless seventh inning.

Along with his RBI double, DeMell added a triple and a walk at the plate. Kyle Laws '22 also tripled and scored a run for the Lancers.

Gilmour's games Wednesday and Thursday were postponed due to snow, but the Lancers had a successful return to the diamond Friday.

The Lancers scored 11 times in the third inning to cruise to a 14-0 win over John Marshall High School.

Dan Jevnikar '22 tossed a five-inning no-hitter with 11 strikeouts. The junior needed just 63 pitches to finish off the shutout.

Charlie Shepherd went 2-for-2 with a home run, a triple and a walk. DiPuccio had blasted a three-run homer to get Gilmour on the board in the second inning.

Kay had two hits, including a double, while Will Lazzaro '23 and Paddy Murphy '22 also doubled.

Gilmour ended the week with a setback on Saturday, but the Lancers were quite competitive in a 4-2 loss to a strong St. Ignatius team.

Gilmour actually held a 2-0 lead after four innings, but the Wildcats scored four runs over the final three frames to claim a come-from-behind win.

Lazzaro had a solid start on the mound but settled for a no decision as he allowed four hits and two runs in five innings of action.

Charlie Shepherd homered for the third straight game while Bandwen went 2-for-3 with a double in the setback.

Gilmour will have a chance to turn the tables on St. Ignatius as the two teams are scheduled for a second meeting of the regular season on May 3.
