DeMell Throws Second Straight No-Hitter on Senior Day

Pitcher Ben DeMell '21 continued to etch his name into Gilmour Academy baseball lore as he ended last week with a second straight fantastic outing.

DeMell no-hit Benedictine High School this past Friday as the Lancers hosted Senior Day. It marked his second consecutive no-hitter as he did not allow a hit in his previous outing against South Range High School on May 8.

DeMell's seven-inning effort allowed the Lancers to cruise to a 7-0 victory, a win which also marked the first shutout of the season for the ace. He struck out 16 of the 23 batters he faced while throwing 69 of his 102 pitches for strikes.

Gilmour scored six times while racking up 11 hits in its first three turns at bat, providing plenty of cushion for their senior ace.

Tommy McCrone '23 and Charlie Shepherd '21 both finished 2-for-2 with a triple, a stolen base and a run scored while posting one and two RBI, respectively. Shepherd also reached base safely via a hit by pitch.

Dan Jevnikar '22 and Mick Hopkins '22 both added two hits, a RBI and a run scored.

Gilmour honored four seniors prior to the contest for their contributions to the school and the baseball program: Vinny Bandwen '21, Ben DeMell '21, Jimmy McCrone '21 and Charlie Shepherd '21. Head coach John Murphy '88 presented each of the seniors with a personalized engraved bat featuring the GA logo and colors.

The Senior Day win over Benedictine was actually the second half of a home-and-home series with the Bengals. The Lancers had claimed a 13-3 win in five innings in a road game the prior afternoon.

With the score tied 1-1 after two innings, Gilmour used five hits and a Bengal error to score five times in the top of the third. After Benedictine answered with a pair of runs in the home half, the Lancers came right back—using two hits, two walks, a hit batter and a sacrifice fly—by scoring four times in the fourth.

Bandwen, McCrone and Paddy Murphy '22 all had multi-hit days in the first meeting with Benedictine.

Bandwen went 2-for-2 with a walk and three RBI, Murphy finished 2-for-3 with a game-high four RBI while McCrone was 2-for-3 with three runs scored.

DeMell and Mick Hopkins '22 each had a hit, two walks and multiple runs scored.

Murphy earned the complete-game win on the mound, allowing two earned runs to get his third win of the season. He struck out five while walking a lone batter.

The two wins over Benedictine, along with a loss at Archbishop Hoban High School earlier in the week, put Gilmour's record at 15-8 heading into the postseason.
