Lancer Boys Basketball Recap: Varsity Team Goes 1-1 in a Week of Road Games

Varsity weekly recap (written by head coach Dan Decrane): The Varsity Lancers went 1-1 in a pair of road games this week. Starting off with a dominant 77-58 win over Cornerstone, Brandon Rose '23 scored a career-high 19 points on 8 of 11 shooting, to go along with seven rebounds. The lead extended to as many as 32 in the second half. The entire starting lineup for the Lancers tallied double figures, as Ryan Mueller '22 had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore Dorjan Flowers '23 led the defensive charge while also leading the team with six assists.

The Lancers dropped a tough contest to Archbishop Hoban on Saturday. While leading after one quarter of play, the ball did not bounce the Lancer's way for much of the contest. Trailing 28-27 late in the third quarter, the Knights closed out the game on a 27-15 run. Senior Ben DeMell '21 had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, while front-court mate Mueller scored a team-high 12 points. The Lancers shot seven of nine from the free-throw line, however, the team struggled from beyond the arc, as they made just one three-pointer.

Junior Varsity weekly recap (written by head coach Isaiah Matthews): The Lancers played three road games last week that resulted in a big win against Cornerstone Christian Academy and two hard-fought losses against University School and a strong Archbishop Hoban team. Against Cornerstone, Jakob Kavcic '24 and Tim Lee '24 led the Lancers in scoring with nine points each, while Marcus Berrios '23 came off the bench and chipped in six points for the team. In a tough loss that came down to the last possession against the Preppers, Peter Kavcic '22 had a team-high 11 points while Chad Plucinsky '23 was second in scoring with seven points. The team had significant contributions on both ends of the court from several players, as different Lancers hit big shots and made great stops defensively. At Hoban, the team came up short against one of the best teams they have faced all season. The Lancers competed for 28 minutes and battled through a lot of adversity. Andy Kavcic '24 scored a team-high 11 points and Peter Kavcic had 10 points against the Knights. Lee, J. Kavcic and Plucinsky also contributed offensively, as they scored six points. The Lancers not only had a great week of competition, but made excellent strides in practices. The team is certainly coming together, and working hard to achieve common goals moving forward this season. The Lancers are looking forward to another week of strong competition, as they face Lorain and Harvey next.

Freshman weekly recap (written by head coach Joe Biven): On Friday, the Lancers traveled up the road to compete against rival University School. The Lancers battled against a strong opponent, and had significant offensive contributions from Kevin Flaherty '24 (13 points), Joe Delaney '24 (nine points) and Nick Speyer '24 (nine points). Despite the team's offensive efforts, the Preppers had a run late in the game that ultimately resulted in a 46-39 loss for the Lancers. On Saturday, the Lancers headed to Akron to face Archbishop Hoban. The Knights took the lead early in the game and held onto it for the rest of the contest, as they defeated the Lancers 63-28. JP Loeser '24 led the team in scoring with 10 points.
