Lancer Boys Basketball Recap: Week of Sunday, January 17 - Saturday, January 23

Varsity weekly recap (written by head coach Dan DeCrane): The Lancers had three tough battles this week. Starting on Tuesday, the team defeated the Streetsboro Rockets 48-41. Leading the way was Ryan Mueller '22, who scored 17 points and wracked up nine rebounds, while Brandon Rose '23 added 11 points and had eight rebounds on the night. Andre Rodgers '21 had four assists and helped facilitate the Lancers' offense against the Rockets.

The Lancers then traveled to the west side to play at Padua on Friday night. The Lancers had difficulty finishing off the Bruins, and ultimately lost 65-54. Ben DeMell '21 led the team in scoring with 13 points and had nine rebounds, while front-court mate Mueller had 11 points and seven boards. Rose added four assists.

On Senior Night, the Lancers dropped a hard contest to Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin 68-58. Rodgers poured in a season-high 13 points, while Rose tallied a career-high 10 rebounds. Adisa Molton '23 finished off a perfect weekend from the freethrow line, as he went 13 of 13, including seven of seven against the Lions. Dorjan Flowers '23 paced the team's defensive effort with 3 steals.

Junior Varsity weekly recap (written by head coach Isaiah Matthews): The Lancers went 3-0 this week in competition, putting together impressive wins against strong opponents. In the team's 63-54 victory against Streetsboro, Peter Kavcic '22 and Jakob Kavcic '24 led the Lancers in scoring with 11 points each, and Dorjan Flowers '23 added 10 points. Tommy Moe '23 and Tim Lee '24 also had a strong offensive showing against the Rockets, chipping in six points each. The team played exceptionally well together, and everyone who competed in the game scored for the Lancers.

The team then traveled to Padua, seeking revenge as the Lancers previously lost to the Bruins by five points earlier this season. The Lancers redeemed themselves, and earned a solid win on the road, defeating the Bruins 46-36. Flowers led the team in scoring with 14 points, and was dominant defensively, while Jackson Wahl '23 added nine points in the contest. Like the game against Streetsboro, several players made significant contributions on both ends of the floor, and the team's effort and energy were unmatched.

The Lancers then hosted Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin in their last game of the week, and defeated the Lions 51-40. Ian Baird '23 led the team in scoring, contributing 11 points off of the bench. Several other Lancers had strong offensive performances, including Chad Plucisnky '23 who added 10 points, Jakub Kavcic who scored seven points, and Flowers and Lee, who had six points each.

This week was one of growth for the Lancers, and the team is looking to build off of their momentum going into the last leg of the season.

Freshman weekly recap (written by head coach Joe Biven): The Lancers began the week by traveling to Padua to take on the Bruins. After a tightly contested first half, Gilmour was down by 12 points early in the third quarter. Dominic Salupo '24 sparked the team's offensive run by hitting four three-pointers in the third quarter. Salupo's lights out shooting continued as he poured in 24 of his 26 points in the second half. After a strong offensive showing as a team in the second half, the Lancers earned the win and edged out the Bruins 47-43.

Next, the team hosted Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin on Saturday, and defeated the Lions 53-44.  In the most complete win as a team so far this season, 10 different players scored for the Lancers. Nick Speyer '24 led the team in scoring with 11 points, while Andrew Minder '24, Trevor Weltle '24 and Finn Rath '24 played incredible defense throughout the game, stopping any possible comeback from NDCL.
