Gilmour Takes Down US, Padua

The Gilmour Academy varsity boys basketball team got back on the winning track with a pair of victories in contrasting styles this past weekend.

In their third game of the season, the Lancers traveled to face archrival University School and walked away with a commanding 88-58 victory.

Gilmour jumped out of the gates early and never looked back as GA erupted for 31 first-quarter points and led by 16 after the opening period. The Lancers had opened up a 53-26 lead at the half and put the running clock into motion during the third quarter.

While Gilmour excelled in many areas, the Lancers' success was especially aided by the turnover differential.

Gilmour grabbed 16 steals on the day and forced the Preppers into 20 turnovers overall. On the other hand, the Lancers only committed five turnovers themselves. As a result, Gilmour had a 41-8 lead in transition points over University School.

Adisa Molton II '23 led the way for Gilmour as he scored a game-high 21 points in 21 minutes of action. He shot 8-of-12 from the floor, including 2-of-4 from distance, while adding a game-high six assists and two steals.

Ryan Mueller '22 posted an impressive double-double in the win. He had 17 points and a game-high 15 rebounds while notching four assists and two steals.

Nathan Flaherty '22, Dorjan Flowers '23 and Brandon Rose '23 helped give Gilmour five different players in double figures in the win over US.

Flaherty had 11 points, three rebounds and two assists, Flowers posted 10 points and three steals and Rose finished with 10 points, five boards and two assists.

Andy Kavcic '24 notched a game-high five steals and also added six points and five rebounds in the win.

After notching a big win over their rival, the Lancers faced the tough task of playing a game the following day at Padua Franciscan High School. The contest was a rematch of last year's OHSAA District Final, a game in which the Lancers claimed a 42-38 victory.

Gilmour fell behind early as the Bruins led for the entire first half and took a 30-22 lead at intermission. Head coach Dan DeCrane challenged his team during his halftime talk to play to their potential and win every possession in the second half.

The Lancers responded by outscoring Padua 18-6 in the third quarter to surge into the lead after three periods of play. The game remained close early in the fourth quarter before the Lancers started to pull away in the waning minutes as Gilmour went on to post a 59-46 victory. GA outscored Padua 37-16 during the second half.

Rose filled up the stat sheet for Gilmour, tallying a team-high 18 points along with seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Mueller notched his second double-double of the weekend by finishing with 12 points, 10 rebounds and a pair of assists.

Molton added 14 points, three rebounds and a game-high six assists for the Lancers while Flowers contributed 10 points and seven rebounds.

Gilmour held Padua to just 34.7 percent shooting from the field and only a 1-for-9 mark from three. The Lancers also posted a 39-26 rebounding advantage in the victory.

Both the Gilmour junior varsity and freshman teams went 1-1 this past week.

The JV team claimed a thrilling 48-47 win at Padua as Kevin Flaherty '24 hit the go-ahead layup with 15 seconds left off a feed from Timothy Lee '24. David Pfundstein '25 led GA with 16 points in the win while Brady Olsen '25 had nine and Flaherty netted eight.

The freshman team claimed a convincing 49-21 victory over rival University School to get their first win of the season. Jackson Anderson '25 led Gilmour with 15 points while Matthew Lambert '25 chipped in with nine and Kysaiah Jackson '25 added eight.

Gilmour will return to action this coming Friday, Dec. 17, when it welcomes Archbishop Hoban High School to Lancer Gymnasium.
