Lancers Cruise to Fifth Straight Sectional Title

The Gilmour Academy varsity boys golf team opened the postseason by winning its OHSAA Sectional Tournament held at Pine Hills Golf Club this past week.

The Lancers topped the field of 14 teams with a team score of 313, which was 16 shots ahead of the runner-up. The victory was the fifth consecutive sectional championship for Gilmour.

All four of Gilmour's scoring golfers finished among the top six (and ties) in the 73-player field. Pine Hills played at 6,353 yards for the day with a par of 72.

Jack Popovich '22 led Gilmour, and tied for second overall, by shooting a 75. Starting on the back nine, Popovich posted five birdies in his first eight holes to shoot 34 over his opening nine of the day.

Alex Swinarski '22 was one shot behind his classmate as his round of 76 placed him fourth overall. Swinarski tallied 13 pars and birdied the par-5 seventh on his day.

Harry Rogers '22 finished fifth overall with his round of 80. Rogers closed his round brilliantly, shooting a 37 in his final nine holes, featuring six pars, a birdie and two bogeys.

Nathan Flaherty '22 shot a round of 82 and finished in a tie for sixth place. Flaherty notched 10 pars on the day, including on four of his final five holes.

Eric Anton '22 added a top-20 finish with his round of 87. Anton continued to battle after a rough start to his round and found seven shots on his second nine of the day compared to his opening nine.

With the win, Gilmour advances to the OHSAA District Tournament to be held Thursday, Oct. 7, at Tannenhauf Golf Club in Alliance, Ohio. The top three teams at the District Tournament will advance to the OHSAA State Tournament in mid-October.
