Two Lancers Earn All-Ohio Honors, Six Recognized by News Herald

Five members of the Gilmour Academy varsity boys golf team, along with head coach Jamey Polak, each received postseason awards after their highly-successful 2021 season.

Both Jack Popovich '22 and Alex Swinarski '22 earned All-Ohio recognition as a result of their finishes at the OHSAA State Championship. Popovich garnered All-Ohio First Team honors while Swinarski notched Second Team honors.

Swinarski, who was an All-Ohio honoree for the second consecutive season, was also selected as the News Herald's Co-Player of the Year.

Swinarski was the Lancers' most frequent top finisher during the season. He had the lowest round of any Lancer in each of the first six tournament during the season and shot rounds of 72 in a trio of events (Warrior/Jaguar Classic, Alliance Golf Classic and University School Invitational). He won the OHSAA Northeast District Championship, putting forth an incredible round of 71 to place first in the 54-player field. He went on to finish in a tie for sixth place at the State Championship, with a two-day total of 155.

Both Popovich and Harry Rogers '22 were tabbed News Herald First Team All-Stars.

Popovich was Gilmour's highest finisher at two of their three postseason events. He took second place at the OHSAA Sectional Championship with a round of 75. He then went on to finish in sole possession of fifth place at the State Championship with a two-day total of 154.

Rogers was the Lancers' third-best finisher in each of their three postseason events. He shot an 80 in the Sectional Championship at Pine Hills and an 81 in the District Championship at Tannenhauf Golf Club. Rogers used rounds of 80 and 82 to collect a top-20 State Championship finish, his best performance at the event in his third time competing in it.

Eric Anton '22 and Nathan Flaherty '22 were both named News Herald Second Team All-Stars.

Anton tied for the low GA score when the Lancers hosted the Reece Alexander Invitational with a 77. He also had Gilmour's second-lowest score at the District Championship with a 79.

Flaherty tied for the low GA score at the Lion Invitational at Quail Hollow Country Club, shooting a 77.

Anton and Flaherty both notched top-20 finishes at the State Championship.

Head coach Jamey Polak was named as the News Herald Coach of the Year.

Polak guided Gilmour to State Runner-Up honors as the Lancers placed second at the season-ending State Tournament. It marked the best GA finish at the event since 2017. Gilmour also claimed Sectional and District team championships and won three regular-season events (Warrior/Jaguar Classic, Tannenhauf Invitational and Alliance Golf Classic).
