Wild Win Caps Strong Week for GA

The Gilmour Academy boys 16-U hockey team successfully opened a 12-game homestand this past week as the Lancers won four times in five opportunities.

The Lancers opened the week with a midweek matchup against the Cleveland Barons. When the teams met in GA's season opener in September, the Barons claimed a 5-1 victory. The second matchup of the season proved just how far Gilmour has come, as the Lancers posted a 4-2 victory over their local foes.

Nick Arrington '24, Alex Atchison '23, Clark Furman '23 and Johnny Maruna '24 each scored in the win while Connor Varmecky '24 tallied the win in goal.

The Lancers then welcomed a pair of teams over the weekend, the Buffalo Regals and Pittsburgh Vengeance, playing a two-game series against each.

In the first game against Buffalo, the Regals held a 5-3 lead after two periods. However, the Lancers dominated the final frame, scoring four times without reply, en route to a 7-5 come-from-behind victory.

Furman had a hat trick, Maruna scored twice and Haydenn Bouley '23 and Jack Rosensteel '25 each scored once as Varmecky posted the win in between the pipes.

Bouley earned the team's Hard Hat Award for scoring the winning goal while Furman grabbed the Jacket.

Gilmour closed out the sweep of the Regals, a top-20 opponent nationally, with a 6-2 victory Saturday afternoon.

Furman had his second straight multi-goal game, this time scoring twice. Mike Yang '24 also scored twice while Vaughn Pongonis '23 and Rosensteel each scored once.

Max Ritt '25 earned the team's Hard Hat Award for playing a solid game in the defensive end while also chipping in offensively with a couple of assists. Pongonis claimed the Jacket for his effort throughout the contest along with his goal that helped put the game away.

Gilmour then played a pair of overtime thrillers in the two contests against the Vengeance.

After dropping a 4-3 heartbreaker on Saturday night, Gilmour trailed 6-5 late in the series finale Sunday morning.

With just seven seconds remaining in regulation, Rosensteel riffled a shot in to tie the game after receiving a beautiful cross-ice feed from Luke Burke '24. He wasn't done yet though. In the final minute of overtime, Rosensteel blasted home the game-winning goal courtesy of a pass from Furman.

In addition to Rosensteel's two goals, Furman and Maruna each scored twice while Sam Luan '24 added a goal.

Rosensteel claimed the Hart Hat Award for his heroics while Maruna claimed the Jacket.

With their 4-1 record this past week, the Lancers have now won 17 of their past 23 games dating to mid-October.

Gilmour will take the upcoming weekend off from competition before welcoming a trio of western Pennsylvania teams for the Gilmour Holiday Tournament Dec. 17-19.
