John Malloy’s name is synonymous with Gilmour Academy hockey as he has been with the program, in various roles over the years, since the school began sponsoring the sport in 1997.

Malloy served as the hockey director for his first 22 years at Gilmour. He took on the role of head coach of the Varsity A boys team in 2005, which he has continued to coach ever since.

Malloy directed the Lancers to OHSAA State Runner-Up honors in 2008 and trips to the OHSAA Frozen Four in 2011 and 2020. Unfortunately, his 2019-20 squad, which racked up an overall record of 35-5-3 to go with its CLE League Cup championship and OHSAA Division I District championship, was unable to compete at the state tournament due to the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Malloy was inducted into the Lancer Athletics Hall of Fame in 2016 for his dedication and commitment to the hockey program, and in 2019, was inducted into the Greater Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame. On December 1, 2019, he became the all-time leader for varsity career victories in Ohio high school hockey history with 641.

With the conclusion of the 2020-21 season, his all-time high school coaching record stands at 685-356-47, which includes a 357-244-40 record as the varsity coach at Gilmour. Malloy has amassed an overall coaching record, at all levels, of 877-440-57.

Prior to leading Gilmour's Varsity A team, Malloy served as the boys prep head coach from 1998-2004. He ran Gilmour’s ice arena from 1998-2012 and currently serves as an Assistant Athletic Director for Ice Programming. Malloy, who was the boys junior varsity golf head coach from 2007-10, also works with and assists in the school’s admissions and advancement departments.

A long-time advocate of hockey, Malloy founded the Midwest Prep Hockey League (MPHL) and was also a co-founder of the Great Lakes Hockey League (GLHL), which Gilmour became a part of in the league’s inaugural 2013-14 season.

Prior to Gilmour, Malloy was the head varsity coach at Cleveland Heights High School (1982-1995) and directed the team to five city championships, five OHSAA Frozen Four appearances, one state runner-up finish and one state championship. He also served as the head coach at Rocky River High School (1995-97) when the varsity team claimed the Baron Cup title.

A four-year hockey player at Miami University, Malloy was a team captain during the RedHawks’ inaugural varsity season. His name is written in the record books on several occasions, through the 2020-21 season, including for most assists in a period (5), most assists in a game (6), most assists in a season (52) and most points in a period (5). He ranks fourth among all-time leaders for most points in a season (68) and tallied 111 points in two seasons of varsity action.

Malloy earned a Bachelor’s degree in education and went on to earn a Master’s degree in education, both from Miami. The Cincinnati, Ohio native currently resides in Solon with his wife, Erin. The couple has two children, John Tyler ’04 and Jayne.
