The Gilmour Academy varsity boys soccer team improved to 5-0 on the season after two more games this past week. The Lancers were victorious on the road against Division I Mayfield 2-1 with goals by Kessel Richards '21 and Alexander Beedles '22 (pictured). Head Coach Joe Ciuni '77 was excited for the victory citing it was only Gilmour's fourth career win against the Wildcats.
The Lancers then went on to beat Wickliffe 4-0 on goals by Beedles (2), Eric Brandt '21 and Connor Underwood '22. Defenders John Stack '23 and Andrew Minder '24 helped the offense out against Wickliffe, recording their first assists of the season. Underwood also totaled two assists in the game to complement his own tally.
Goalkeeper Matt Beck '21 earned his fourth shutout of the season after racking up 21 saves on the week. His career shutout total is now at 19, which falls just shy of the current record set by Dave Corvi '03 at 19.5 during the 1999-2002 seasons.
In other soccer news, Beedles was selected as a News-Herald Player of the Week this week for his outstanding scoring efforts thus far this season. He currently ranks seventh among leading goal scorers in the area as Gilmour ranks No. 7 in the News-Herald Top of the Crop. Coach Ciuni believes this is a result of the work he put in during the summer to perfect his shooting and finishing skills around the net.
When asked about Beedles as a player, Ciuni said, "Alexander is quiet and leads by example. He is respectful of authority and is a pleasure to coach. He is well-liked and respected by his teammates. Alexander never complains about what position I put him at … and I have played him at every position except goalkeeper this year … he never stops giving 100% when on the field."
Beedles is the fourth Gilmour fall sports athlete to earn News-Herald Player of the Week honors this school year. Others include:
