The Gilmour Academy varsity boys soccer team had a busy week with three games on the schedule. The Lancers started out against a powerful Archbishop Hoban squad, losing at home 6-0. Matt Beck '21 totaled 17 saves for the game.

Gilmour then hosted crosstown rival Hawken for Senior Day just two days later and posted a 2-1 victory. All nine seniors started the game. Within the first six minutes of play, Joe Roddy '21 (pictured on the left) scored his first goal of the season on an assist from Kessel Richards '21 (pictured on the right). The senior-to-senior combination was a fitting way to kick off the special day. Team-leading scorer Alexander Beedles '22 scored midway through the second half with the assist by Kyle Laws '22. The Lancers held the Hawks scoreless until the final five minutes, when the rivals managed to sneak one into the back of the net. Beck had seven saves for the game and, according to head coach Joe Ciuni '77, "was solid in goal."

In the final game of the week, on the road at Cleveland Heights, the score was tied at 0 at the half. Richards was taken down in the penalty box with 21 minutes to play and was awarded a penalty kick. He calmly converted it to put GA up 1-0. Then, with 11 minutes remaining, Richards scored again off a perfectly placed pass from Eric Brandt '21. The Lancers won the game by a final score of 2-1 and Beck totaled seven saves.

"The defensive back four of Kyle Laws, John Stack '23, Michael Giancola '23 and Andrew Minder '24 did an excellent job holding off a powerful Cleveland Heights forward line," said Ciuni.

Ciuni was also impressed with the junior varsity game. "The JV team lost 1-0 in another hard-fought battle. The ball just didn't bounce our way. Goalkeeper JD FitzGerald '21 had 12 saves and kept his team in the game as he owned the box."
