The Gilmour Academy Middle School coed soccer team began practicing earlier in September and just recently had its first official competitions. The Lancers took to the road to play Open Door Christian and Garfield Heights in what turned out to be a reversal of fortunes in a sense. Opening up with a seasoned opponent, Gilmour learned quickly what a strong adversary looks like. Although the Lancers were dealt a mighty defeat, they learned valuable lessons from the game and applied them to their second match of the season.

Against the Garfield Bulldogs, Gilmour clicked on all cylinders and was able to move the ball around nicely, involving all members of the team. Goals were scored by multiple Lancers as the final score was quite different from the game one result, with a 13-0 win.

Head coach Jessica Simonetta '05 has enjoyed working with the team during her first year at the helm of the program.

"We have an incredible group of players who are passionate about the game and are super excited to be playing," she said. "They have made immense progress in their learning and skill development and have come together as a team."

Dominik Povozhaev '25 is the lone eighth grader on the team. According to Coach Simonetta, he has taken initiative in leading and encouraging his teammates, therefore earning a permanent spot as team captain.

Two other players making a big impression on the program are Angela Kerwood '26 and Mary Turner '26.

"Although the team is predominantly boys, these two young ladies nicely balance the team and are quite competitive," said Simonetta.
