Lancer Offense Comes Alive in Two-Win Week

The Gilmour Academy varsity boys soccer team won a pair of matches in contrasting styles this past week as the Lancers were in the midst of their second week of the regular season.

Gilmour began the week by edging Benedictine High School, holding on for a 2-1 win at home. The Lancers then traveled to Wickliffe High School and posted a dominating 4-0 victory over the Blue Devils.

In their first win of the week, Gilmour got out to a fast start. Fewer than seven minutes into the contest, Alexander Beedles '22 found the run of Carter Richmond '25, who split between Bengal defenders. Upon receiving Beedles' pass, Richmond hit the ball first time from 13 yards out and found the bottom left corner.

Later in the first half, Beedles was the beneficiary of a quality pass by a teammate. Joe Delaney '24 played the ball forward, and Beedles outraced the defender to the ball. The goalkeeper came out to challenge, but the Lancer forward got there first and tapped the ball past the onrushing keeper and into the net from 12 yards out.

Benedictine made it interesting as it cut its deficit in half with a goal via a penalty kick in the second half. However, the Lancers were able to hang on to claim the victory.

Nathan Nootbaar '22 had three saves for GA as Gilmour had a 7-4 lead in shots on goal.

While Gilmour had to hang on against the Bengals, the contest at Wickliffe was not as competitive. The Lancers peppered the opposing goal and had a 22-1 advantage in shots on goal.

Beedles and Kyle Laws '22 had quite a connection against the Blue Devils. They directly combined for three goals—Beedles scoring twice courtesy of Laws while Laws scored once with an assist from Beedles.

Eli Swirsky '23 added an unassisted goal, his first strike of the season, while Nootbaar earned the shutout in goal, Gilmour's first of the season.

Gilmour's junior varsity squad also went 2-0 on the week, courtesy of a pair of strong individual offensive efforts.

The Lancer JV team topped Benedictine 3-1 as Andre LaCroix '23 tallied all three goals for the hosts. Gilmour then claimed a 2-1 win at Wickliffe with Triston Sherwood '23 scoring both goals for GA.
