Joe Ciuni '77 is in his sixth season as the head coach of the Gilmour Academy boys soccer program with the 2021-22 season, after having spent eight seasons at the helm of the Gilmour Academy girls soccer program.

In his eight seasons with the girls program, his teams compiled an overall record of 91-37-21 with his 2012 team earning a No. 4 ranking among Division III schools in the state. His teams also earned the Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association (OSSCA) Team Academic Award eight consecutive years. On the boys side, Ciuni has compiled an overall record of 44-36-10 with his 2017 team earning the best postseason finish to date as district runners-up.

Prior to coaching at Gilmour, Ciuni directed the Cleveland Heights-University Heights Community Service Team (1988-98), the Eastside Kickers Boys Youth Travel Soccer Club (1992-2000), Gesu School Boys 7th and 8th grade CYO (1995-2008) and Gesu School Girls 7th and 8th grade CYO (2006-08). His Gesu boys teams earned five city championships and compiled an overall record of 128-33-7, while his Gesu girls teams earned two city championships and an overall record of 23-5-2.

As a player, Ciuni was a four-year letterman at Gilmour, serving as a team captain his senior season. He went on to play at the University of Notre Dame, where he was a three-year letterman, scoring a total of 14 goals and 10 assists while serving as co-captain as a senior. He was a member of Notre Dame’s first-ever varsity soccer team in 1977 and helped the Fighting Irish to a 77-21-3 record in his time as a player. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Notre Dame in civil engineering before playing for the Hungarian Hunters from 1983-89, in which time the team earned two league titles as members of the Major Division in the Lake Erie Soccer League.

A current resident of Shaker Heights, Ohio, he and his wife of 40 years, Mary Jo, have four children who all graduated from Gilmour—Joe ’03, Jane ’04, Tom ’06, and Mike ’08. He is employed by the GPD Group which is an architectural and engineering firm and is a member of the United Soccer Coaches. Ciuni is a member of the Gilmour Academy Board of Trustees.
