The Gilmour Academy boys varsity tennis team collected its first two wins of the season last week, picking up a pair of victories on the Lancer tennis courts.
Gilmour began the week by taking down Canton Central Catholic High School, claiming a 3-2 victory. The match was a first-round contest in the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association Team Tournament.
James Zhou '21 claimed a convincing 6-1, 6-1 victory at the top spot of the singles lineup while Aidan Fuerpass '22 posted a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles. Daniel Botek '21 and Joseph Roddy '21 tallied a 6-3, 6-2 victory at the second doubles spot to give Gilmour a crucial third point.
With the win, the Lancers advanced to OTCA Northeast Region quarterfinals. Gilmour will face Ursuline High School on the road in the final week of April with a berth to the regional semifinals on the line.
One day after posting their 3-2 win, the Lancers claimed a clean sweep in a 5-0 win over Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin School.
Zhou again won easily at the top spot as he did not drop a game in claiming victory. Robert Sullivan '22 was nearly flawless in tallying a 6-1, 6-0 win at the second singles spot. Fuerpass had a tougher test than the day prior but prevailed at the third singles spot with a 4-6, 6-2, 11-9 victory.
Gilmour would claim both doubles matches but needed a third set in each match.
Botek and Roddy moved up to the first doubles spot against the Lions and claimed a 7-5, 0-6, 6-1 win. GA posted a 6-4, 6-7, 6-2 win at the second doubles spot.
Gilmour ended the week by dropping a tight 3-2 decision at Hawken School, a team listed in the top four of the most recent district rankings.
