The Gilmour Academy boys tennis program honored its senior class this past Friday in conjunction with the varsity team's 5-0 win over Archbishop Hoban High School at the Lancer Tennis Courts.

The Lancers honored the following seniors for their contributions to the program in a ceremony prior to the match: Colin Bauman '21, Daniel Botek '21, Eric Brandt '21, JD FitzGerald '21, Teddy FitzGerald '21, Maddox Hart '21, Ryan Hoyt '21, Zach Mangel '21, Joseph Roddy '21, James Zhou '21 and Clinton Zupanc '21.

Head varsity coach Cyndi Smith and head junior varsity coach Rob Fowler gave heartfelt speeches about each senior to the families, friends and members of the Gilmour community that came together for the event.

After the pre-match ceremony, Gilmour utilized a lineup composed entirely of seniors to post a clean sweep over the Knights.

Zhou claimed a 6-0, 6-2 win at the top of the singles lineup while Teddy FitzGerald did not drop a game in his straight-set victory at the second singles spot.

Mangel dropped the opening set but battled back to secure the lone three-set victory in the contest. He defeated his Hoban opponent, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (10-5).

JD FitzGerald and Roddy teamed up to post a 6-2, 6-2 win at the first doubles spot while Bauman and Hart were just as convincing in victory with a 6-1, 6-1 win at the second doubles position.

Brandt and Clinton teamed up for an exhibition doubles match. The pair was nearly flawless as they did not lose a game while winning two sets.

Gilmour had played two matches earlier in the week prior to its Senior Day win. The Lancers dropped a tough 3-2 decision at Bay High School, but bounced back the following day with a 4-1 win at Kirtland High School.

The doubles teams led the way in the win over the Hornets with a pair of comfortable victories. Zhou and Robert Sullivan '22 claimed a 6-1, 6-1 win at the top spot while Roddy and Botek posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the second spot.

Zupanc battled for a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win over Kirtland at the second singles spot while JD FitzGerald contributed a 6-2, 6-4 win at the third singles spot.

With the regular season winding down, Gilmour will be gearing up for its OHSAA Sectional Tournament. Gilmour will begin postseason action Wednesday, May 12, at Solon Community Park.
