Sullivan and Zhou Advance to Districts

The Gilmour Academy varsity boys tennis team's top doubles pairing of Robert Sullivan '22 and James Zhou '21 extended their season another week by advancing to the OHSAA District Tournament.

Sullivan and Zhou advanced to the District Tournament on the strength of their performance at the Solon Sectional Tournament held this past week at Solon Community Park.

By virtue of earning a high seed, Gilmour's top doubles duo earned an opening-round bye.

Sullivan and Zhou won their opening two matches without dropping a game, posting identical 6-0, 6-0 victories over opponents from West Geauga High School and Perry High School.

Sullivan and Zhou then won the opening set of their semifinal match but would end up losing a three-set match. The pair did rebound to post a 6-1, 6-3 victory over a team from Geneva High School in the third-place match.

As a result of their third-place finish, the Lancer team qualified for the District Tournament, where berths to the OHSAA State Tournament are determined.

A number of other Gilmour players won matches at the Sectional Tournament.

Joseph Roddy '21 had quite a run, winning three matches on the opening day of the event to advance to the second day of action.

Roddy began the tournament with a 6-2, 6-1 win over an opponent from Edgewood High School. He then put up matching 6-1, 7-5 victories over opponents from Kirtland High School and Saint John School. Roddy's run came to an end in the quarterfinals with a loss to a seeded opponent from Geneva.

Clinton Zupanc '21 won his opening match of the tournament, a 6-2, 6-0 victory over an opponent from Andrews Osborne Academy. Zupanc was right there with his opponent in his second match but dropped a tight 7-6, 7-6 decision.

Aidan Fuerpass '22 and Jakub Sedlacik '22 won their opening match in the doubles tournament, posting a 6-1, 6-1 win over a team from Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin School. The duo would drop their next match to the top seed in the tournament.

Daniel Botek '21 also competed at the event for Gilmour and was the victim of an unfortunate draw. Botek dropped his opening match to the player that went on to win the Solon District singles title.

Sullivan and Zhou will open play at the District Tournament on Friday, May 21, at Springside Athletic Club in Akron, Ohio.
