Johnson Doubles Up on District Titles

The Gilmour Academy boys track and field team began their postseason this past week, and CJ Johnson '22 led the way for the Lancers at the district meet.

Johnson swept the throwing events, claiming a pair of titles at the Cuyahoga Heights District.

Johnson began his postseason by topping the field of 29 competitors in the discus. His fling of 152 feet, 5 inches was more than 21 feet ahead of the second-place finisher, a distance that was greater than the distance that separated second through ninth places. Hunter Sebulsky '23 added a top-10 showing in the event with a distance of 106 feet, 5 inches.

Johnson then proceeded to win the shot put with a heave of 49 feet, 4 inches, topping the field of 31 athletes. His winning mark was more than four feet clear of the runner-up. Griffin Johnson '23 also scored in the event for GA, taking seventh in 40 feet, 0.25 inches.

Scott Vergilii '23 joined CJ Johnson in qualifying for the OHSAA Regional Championships. He posted a fourth-place finish in the 800 meters to continue his season another week. Vergilii crossed the line in 2:06.00, more than four seconds ahead of the time he needed to qualify for the regional meet.

Vergilii also ran the lead leg of Gilmour's 4x400 relay that scored for the Lancers. Tim Lee '23, Anders Sorensen '23 and Alexander Beedles '22 ran the final three legs to finish in a time of 3:48.83.

Beedles just missed earning a trip to the regional meet with his effort in the 400 meters. He posted a fifth-place finish, in a time of 53.46 seconds, just one spot out of a regional position.

Michael Piccirillo '24 also scored in a running event for the Lancers. He placed eighth in the 3200 meters, finishing in a time of 11:28.23.

With CJ Johnson leading the way, Gilmour finished in the top half of the team standings in the Cuyahoga Heights District. Johnson and Vergilii will continue their seasons in the final week of May at the Massillon Perry Regional.
