The varsity cross country team traveled to Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin High School for the North Coast League (NCL) Championship this past Saturday and came away with a pair of strong showings. Unlike the other fall sports, in cross country, there are no divisions, leaving the Lancers to tangle with all league rivals - both big and small.

The girls toed the line first and finished in third place out of 10 teams. Division I powerhouse St. Joseph Academy won the overall team title. The Lancers ran patient races, letting the race develop before committing in mile two. Caitrina Barton '21 (pictured on the left) led the way, finishing in seventh place, which secured First-Team All-Conference honors. Mary Lombardo '22 (11th place), Kaitlin Rulison '23 (16th) and Jorja Hlifka '20 (17th) all were named Second Team All-Conference.

The boys ran second and grabbed fifth place out of nine teams with DI Walsh Jesuit winning top honors. The Lancers were led by the senior trio of Bryson Simpson '20 (10th place) (pictured on the right), Cole Durdella '20 (13th) and Garret Tomasek '20 (40th). Simpson and Durdella were named Second Team All-Conference. The rest of the varsity team members, including Will Kay '23Everett Hunter '21 and Justin Wen '23, all ran strong races, moving up nicely in the last mile to secure a respectable showing for the Lancers.

In other cross country news, inspired by the continued success of his cross country runners, Coach Matthew Lindley was out on the course early Sunday for the Towpath Half-Marathon. Lindley covered the 13.1 mile course in 91 minutes, 35 seconds to finish in 22nd place overall out of 559 runners, and second in his age group. All-in-all, a great weekend for Gilmour running.
