It was anyone's game in the OHSAA Division II sectional final between the varsity girls softball team and host Geneva this past week. Although the Eagles were a higher seed than the Lancers, it was quite the chess match between the two teams. Geneva took a one-run lead in the bottom of the second inning off a solo home run, but the Lancers fought back in their next at bat, tying the score. Emmy Klika '21 (pictured on the right) singled and then scored on an RBI double by Frankie Coan '20. Gilmour added another run to take the lead the following inning on a big double by Maggie Goff '21 (pictured on the left), who then scored three batters later. Geneva continued to battle and took a 3-2 advantage in the bottom of the fifth inning and held it into the seventh. Gilmour's Klika got a one-out single and advanced to second on an error. Then with two outs, Megan Mlinaric '22 hit a rocket into the right-center gap to score Klika and tie the game at three. Geneva was able to get two runners on base in the bottom half of the inning, and with one out, they hit a game-ending home run to end Gilmour's time in the playoffs. The Lancers are not done with the season, however. A make-up North Coast League (NCL) game still looms in the near future. A victory in that game means at least a share of a conference championship for the Lancers.
