Lancers Upset Mentor After Honoring Seniors

While the number of games the Gilmour Academy varsity softball team played last week may have been disappointing, the result from the Lancers' lone contest was far from it.

Gilmour was unable to play four games on its schedule, primarily due to the extremely wet start to the month. However, in their lone game of the week, Gilmour upset Mentor High School with a come-from-behind 8-6 win.

Mentor, a Division I school, had been listed two spots ahead of Gilmour in the News-Herald's weekly listing of the area's top teams prior to the game.

The Lancers had a 5-2 lead after four innings, but a four-run fifth by the Cardinals edged the hosts into the lead. However, Gilmour would come right back with three runs in the sixth, a rally capped by an RBI double by Allison Schuh '23.

The Lancers, led by pitcher Megan Mlinaric '22, would keep Mentor off the scoreboard in the final two innings to collect the noteworthy win.

Schuh had a huge day at the plate and in the field. She went 4-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and two steals. She also made a pair of great catches in the field and was part of a relay that gunned down a Mentor runner attempting to advance to third base.

Mlinaric allowed four earned runs while going the distance in the circle to get the win. She also went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI at the plate.

Emmy Klika '21 and Clare Peterson '23 both went 2-for-4 with a double. Laney Klika '23 played top-notch defense at second base, registering seven assists and a putout on the day.

Although the Lancers' Senior Day plans were continually altered by the weather, the program was able to hold its Senior Day prior to an intrasquad scrimmage at Figgie Field at Sharnsky Stadium.

The Lancers honored eight seniors for their contributions to the school and the softball program: Emma Adams '21, Alayna Breivogel '21, Sophia Cira '21, Maggie Goff '21, Emmy Klika '21, Brinn MacLellan '21, Cayla See '21 and Hannah Weltle '21.

The seniors, along with those escorting them, took a celebratory walk around the bases as part of the ceremony. They received gifts from the freshman, sophomore and junior classes at first, second and third bases, respectively, before returning to home plate.

Gilmour's senior class then helped GA get the win over Mentor the following day, the ninth consecutive victory for the team.
