Lancer Varsity Girls Basketball Wins Three Straight, Moves Up In News-Herald Rankings

The Lancer varsity girls basketball team earned three consecutive wins against Walsh, Hathaway Brown and St. Vincent-St. Mary over the last week. The team's strong showings against challenging opponents resulted in the Lancers moving up a spot in the News-Herald's "Top of the Crop" list. According to the News-Herald, the Lancer varsity girls basketball team is now the fifth-ranked team in the area heading into the final week of the regular season. 

To start their winning streak, Gilmour defeated Walsh 53-49 in Lancer Gymnasium. Lauryn Stover '22 and Nicci Finazzo '24 led the Lancers in scoring, with 11 points each. Angelina Lonardo '22 hit a couple three-pointers and chipped in with eight points on the night. 

The team then traveled to Ursuline College on Saturday, January 30 to take on the Blazers of Hathaway Brown. In a thrilling overtime battle, the Lancers came out on top, defeating Hathaway Brown 62-58. Cooper Flowers '22 dominated offensively, scoring 21 points for the Lancers. Guard Finazzo also chipped in with 19 points, and had a couple key steals defensively. 


Finally, Gilmour hosted 2020 Division II regional finalist St. Vincent-St. Mary on Monday, February 1. The Lancers outscored their opponent in each quarter, and ultimately defeated the Fighting Irish 58-49. Flowers again led the Lancers in scoring with 16 points, followed by Finazzo with 11 points. Guard Megan Duffy '21 added 10 points to Gilmour's final score against SVSM.
