The Gilmour Academy girls prep hockey team began its season in mid-September and this past weekend traveled to Michigan for three games to compete against Adrian College's ACHA Division I team, as well as Michigan's No. 5-ranked prep team – Honey Baked 19U.
Gilmour's first two games were in a college arena, which head coach Seanna Conway described as, "an incredible experience in which the girls competed hard in two exciting and competitive games."
Although the Lancers lost both games (6-3 and 6-2), the team was able to learn from going up against an experienced Adrian program that exhibited an overall physical and mental toughness. In addition to playing in a college arena, the Lancers were also afforded the opportunity to tour campus and get an inside look at the academic side of the college experience.
Gilmour then faced off with state-ranked Honey Baked to finish out the trip north. While the opponents went up 1-0 on the Lancers early, Gilmour stayed patient and worked extremely hard to maintain the fast tempo through all three periods. Alaina Giampietro '22 scored a beautiful goal from the high slot to tie the game before Caroline Thomas '24 put the Lancers up 2-1 by redirecting a shot from defenseman Quinn Hartmetz '21.
With a stunning performance in net by Alayna Breivogel '21, the Lancers held on to the 2-1 lead, even though Honey Baked pulled their goalie in the final minutes for the extra attacker.
"This was an exciting result against a very talented team," said Conway. "We awarded Alayna with the hard hat honor for her tremendous effort to help secure the victory."
