Lancer Girls Prep Hockey Defeats Nichols School 4-3 on Senior Night

The Lancer girls prep hockey team honored their senior athletes Julija Blazinsek '21, Alayna Breivogel '21, Ali Caskey '21, Quinn Hartmetz '21, Isabella Sprang '21 and Bridgit Terry '21 on Saturday, February 13, prior to their matchup against Nichols Schools.

At the conclusion of the senior ceremony, the Lancers took on Nichols School. After losing to Nichols earlier in the day 4-1, Gilmour came out with vengeance and Lyla Tsu '23 scored a quick goal in the first period. The Lancers struck again in the second period, as Ziya Damas '23 buried the puck in the back of the net with 12 minutes remaining in the second, giving the Lancers a 2-1 lead. Senior Blazinsek had the assist. In the third period, Gilmour's Emma Pickering '23 scored two goals and solidified a 4-3 win for the Lancers over Nichols. Breivogel earned the win in the net for the Lancers.

After the game, head coach Seanna Conway had the opportunity to reflect on each senior, and their lasting impact on the program.

"Bridgit Terry has been the ultimate team player, always enthusiastic for her teammates and always pushing herself to be her best in the weight room and on the ice. She loves to compete. She brings a unique perspective to our team, as she is keenly aware of the importance of being inclusive of all people," said Conway of Terry.

"Isabella Sprang is extremely fast and uses her smaller stature to her advantage by weaving in and out of traffic constantly. She is a true competitor and took it upon her shoulders to welcome our incoming players the last few seasons," said Conway of Sprang.

"Julija Blazinsek's stick-handling and her goal-scoring ability are outstanding. She makes great reads of the game and has impeccable timing and patience - most parts of her game just cannot be taught. She is shy, but hilarious and we will miss her abilities and her sweet demeanor when she graduates this year," said Conway of Blazinsek.

"Ali Caskey is the consummate teammate, always positive, always listening and always trying to do more to help us win. We will miss her sweet, sensitive personality next season, as well as her killer wrist shot," said Conway of Caskey.

"Alayna Breivogel is one of the hardest workers I have ever coached, battling hard for every puck in practice and in games. She has stood on her head for her teammates on countless occasions, helping us beat the sixth-ranked team in the country twice this season. While she battles hard in practice, she is a kind, thoughtful, communicative and easy-going teammate off the ice, always bringing a sense of calm to every situation. She will be missed more than she can imagine," said Conway of Breivogel.

"Quinn Hartmetz is a very talented defenseman, who hunts for pucks, is physical, but disciplined, skilled, and very patient. She is both offensively gifted but also defensively sound and leaves incredibly big skates to fill next season. She is kind, funny and leads by example in all that she does," said Conway of Hartmetz.

The Lancers will host Nichols once more in the team's final game of the regular season on Friday, February 26 at 4 p.m. Fans of the Lancers can click here to watch the contest.
