The Gilmour 16U girls hockey team will begin its quest for a national championship later this week.

By virtue of winning the Mid-American District title last month, Gilmour qualified for the USA Hockey Tier I 16U National Championships. The tournament begins Thursday, April 29, and will conclude with the championship game Monday, May 3. The event is taking place at the Ice Line Quad Rinks facility in West Chester, Pa.

Sixteen teams, separated into four-team pools, will take part in the tournament. The teams will contest a single round-robin within their pool over the first three days of the event. The top two teams in each pool will advance to the bracket portion of the tournament.

The single-elimination bracket will see both the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds contested Sunday, May 2, with the two remaining teams playing for the national championship the following day.

Gilmour will begin the event by playing RYA at Selects Academy (N.Y.) on Thursday morning at 8:45 a.m. The team will then face Minnesota Elite Vegas on Friday (5 p.m.) before wrapping up pool play against Team Colorado on Saturday (3 p.m.).

To view schedules, statistics, team standings and more, Gilmour fans can visit USA Hockey's tournament headquarters. Additionally, all the action from the national tournament will be streamed live at HockeyTV.com.

Gilmour qualified for the national tournament with a 4-2 victory over Pittsburgh Penguins Elite in a winner-take-all contest for the district title. Alaina Giampietro '22 had a pair of goals, including the game-winner, while also adding an assist to help send Gilmour to nationals.

Gilmour has previously sent its girls 16U team to the national tournament at the Tier II level, but this will be the first time it sends a team to the Tier I national tournament.

"We are really looking forward to this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to compete for a national championship and will savor every moment, particularly during a season that was never guaranteed to happen," head coach Seanna Conway said. "We are so grateful for the support from our hockey program and for the continued sacrifices the families on this team have made to get us where we are."
