Gilmour Performs Well at USA Canada Cup

The Gilmour Academy girls prep hockey team had a very strong showing as it competed in the USA Canada Cup September Showcase this past weekend.

Gilmour went 4-1 on the weekend at the tournament, held at Fraser Hockeyland in Fraser, Mich.

"Overall this was a huge weekend for our team," head coach Seanna Conway said. "While we did not advance to the medal round, this is by far the best we've performed as a prep team at any of these highly competitive tournaments, and we are really proud of the girls. Emma Pickering led the team in points, and for a defenseman, this is incredible work. She was brilliant all weekend."

Gilmour began the event with a 3-1 victory over Honeybaked. Sophie Healey '23, Alyssa Kraig '23 and Cailin Schwarzer '22 scored for the Lancers while the team's Hard Hat award went to Lea Morrissette '23 for her performance in goal.

The Lancers lost their second game Friday to Little Caesars, a squad that features many players from the defending USA Hockey 16-U national champions.

Gilmour got back on the winning track with a 3-0 victory over the Madison Capitols Saturday afternoon. Emma Pickering '23 scored twice while Maggie Dean '23 added a goal. Morrissette posted the shutout in goal for GA.

The Lancers then were matched up against Belle Tire, a team they lost to in their first tournament of the season. However, Gilmour flipped the script and posted a thrilling 2-1 victory in overtime.

Pickering had the game-winning strike in overtime, which was assisted by Allie Carson. Healey had tallied the Lancers' opening goal, with an assist to Alexandra Brandt '22. Maggie Hatch earned the win in goal for Gilmour.

After missing out on competing in the medal round by one point in the standings, Gilmour closed out the event by holding on for a nailbiting 2-1 win over Biggby Coffee. Ella Johnson '25 and Pickering found the net for GA while Hatch earned her second win of the tournament.

Gilmour has now won six of its last eight games overall.

The Lancers will have a challenge on their hands this coming weekend as they welcome the only team that beat them this past weekend, Little Caesars, for a three-game series at the Floyd E. Stefanski Ice Center.
