Lancers Collect Quality Win Upon Return Home

In what proved to be their only action last week, the Gilmour Academy varsity girls soccer team claimed a 2-0 victory against North Ridgeville High School at Weber Stadium.

Gilmour has enjoyed the comforts of home thus far this season as the win improved the Lancers to 2-0-1 on their home turf this year. The win also helped Gilmour retain its position in the News Herald's Top of the Crop, as the Lancers checked in at No. 9 after their victory.

North Ridgeville had one of its best chances in the match early on, but GA goalkeeper Stacy Barresi '24 was up to the task. She made a brilliant save diving to her left to redirect a high shot around the post and out of play.

Gilmour's forward line began creating more pressure as the first half continued, and their hard work paid off in the 21st minute.

Cooper Flowers '22 played a brilliant ball over the top of the defense that found the run of Adeline Nemeth '24. Nemeth outraced the last defender to the ball, and after taking a couple of touches, blasted the ball past the goalie from 13 yards out.

Gilmour maintained its 1-0 lead through halftime, and the Rangers began increasing their offensive pressure as the second half wore on.

Barresi made another key intervention in the second half. On this occasion, she charged out of the net, slid forward and grabbed the ball right before an attacking player could get a shot off.

The Lancers continued to defend their lead, with admirable work put in by the back line of Grace Terranova '22, Kelly McFadden '23, Abby Minello '22 and Lilly Russo '24.

In the waning minutes of the contest, Gilmour got an insurance goal to effectively seal the win. Flowers, who played distributor on the first goal, scored the second tally as her shot was too powerful for the keeper to keep out.

Gilmour had been scheduled to play at Elyria Catholic High School this past weekend, but that game was postponed at the request of the hosts.

In Gilmour's junior varsity contest with North Ridgeville, the Lancers played to a 1-1 tie. Elaina Kline-Ruminski '25 scored late in the first half for Gilmour.

The Lancers are set to play two matches in each of the next four weeks to close out the regular season.
