Girls Swimming Finishes 12th at State Championships

The Gilmour Academy girls swimming team concluded its season earlier this week by competing in the OHSAA Division II State Championships inside C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton, Ohio.

The Lancers finished 12th in the event, which featured more than 70 schools, tallying 55 total points.

This marks the 10th consecutive season in which the Lancer swim team has finished among the top 15 teams in the state.

Gilmour's best finish came in the 400 freestyle relay as the team came in fifth in 3:37.67. Abby Meyer '21, Savannah Hirsch '24, Laina Collis '24 and Kylee Radigan '23 comprised the quartet for the Lancers.

Radigan, who had the fastest split for Gilmour on the relay (53.46), posted the top individual finish by a Lancer at the meet. She took 10th in the 100 backstroke, finishing in 58.50 seconds. Radigan added a second top-20 individual finish with her effort in the 50 freestyle, taking 17th in 24.59 seconds.

Competing in her final high school meet, Meyer also posted a pair of top-20 individual finishes at the championships. She was 14th in the 100 butterfly (59.53) and took 19th in the 200 freestyle (2:00.34).

Collis had a standout finish in her debut individual event at the state meet. She took 12th in the 200 IM, placing five spots higher than her seed, as she touched the wall in 2:13.04. Collis would later finish 21st in the 100 fly in 1:00.18.

Gilmour also scored significant points in the 200 freestyle relay, taking 11th in 1:41.63. A trio of freshmen—Maddie Sammut '24, Beth Halloran '24 and Hirsch—and a sophomore, Lacie Frech '24 contested the relay for the Lancers, making Gilmour the only school to contest the race without an upperclassman on its relay.

Taylor Markowski '22 also qualified for the state championships and served as an alternate for the Lancers.

Gilmour finished the dual meet portion of its season earlier this winter and finished with a perfect 8-0 record in head-to-head competition.

While the 2020-21 season came to a close Wednesday night, the future is bright for the program. The Lancers have a bevy of talent returning as four of the eight Lancers that qualified for the state meet are in their freshman year.
