Seven Swimmers Earn News-Herald Honors

Seven student-athletes from the Gilmour Academy boys and girls swimming teams were recently recognized with postseason honors by The News-Herald.

Laina Collis '24 and Kylee Radigan '22 led the way for the Lancers as both were named First Team All-Stars.

Collis finished among the top eight in two individual events at the OHSAA state meet. She took seventh in the 100 freestyle final in 53.07 seconds and was eighth in the 200 IM final in 2:10.24. Collis had been seeded 16th in the 200 IM entering the state meet, but she bettered her seed time by more than 2.50 seconds in the prelims to guarantee her spot among the top eight.

In her final season as a Lancer, Radigan earned her first podium finish at the state meet as an individual. She finished sixth overall in the 100 backstroke in 58.15 seconds. Radigan had been seeded 14th in the event entering the meet, but she took well over a second off her seed time over the course of the state championship. Radigan also qualified for and competed in the 50 freestyle at the state meet.

Gianna Minotas '25 and Madeline Sammut '24 were both tabbed Second Team All-Stars by the News-Herald.

In her debut high school season, Minotas qualified for the state championships as an individual in the 100 backstroke. She bettered her seed by six places in the preliminary competition, finishing in a personal-best 1:00.18, and just missed scoring as an individual.

Sammut scored for Gilmour at the state meet in the 200 freestyle. She finished in 13th place overall and improved on her seed time by more than a second during the preliminary competition, when she finished in 1:56.40. Sammut also qualified for and competed in the 100 breaststroke at the state meet.

Collis, Minotas, Radigan and Sammut also combined on two impressive relays at the state meet.

The quartet combined to place sixth in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:39.34, taking over a full second off their seed time and improving by six places. The group then finished the meet by placing eighth in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:39.16. In both relays, Gilmour was one of only two schools to place among the top eight whose relay consisted of at least three freshmen and/or sophomores.

Anna Johannessen '25 was named to the News-Herald's Honor Roll list after her debut high school season. She scored in both of her individual events at the Northeast District meet. Johannessen placed 10th in the 500 freestyle (5:23.21) and 13th in the 200 freestyle (2:02.54).

Two members of Gilmour's boys team also received recognition from the News-Herald. Andrew Lewis '23 was tabbed a Third Team All-Star while Alexander Figurella '22 was named to the Honor Roll.

Lewis scored as an individual in the state meet for the Lancers. He placed 12th overall in the 100 backstroke in 53.40 seconds, just .02 seconds off the school record he set during the district meet. Lewis also qualified for and competed in the 500 freestyle at the state meet, where he finished among the top 20 overall.

Figurella posted a top-10 showing in the 100 butterfly at the Northeast District meet in 55.24 seconds. He also qualified for and competed in the 200 freestyle at the same meet.

Both Figurella and Lewis helped the Gilmour boys qualify a relay to the state meet as well. The duo, along with Ian Colleran '24 and Deaglan Bryant '23, helped Gilmour to an 18th place finish in the 200 medley relay at the state championships.

Five of the seven Lancers to earn honors are set to return to Gilmour next season where they will look to improve on their impressive performances from this past season.
