The Gilmour Academy varsity A girls tennis team beefed up its schedule prior to the postseason. The Lancers went up against the extremely talented teams of Laurel, Mayfield and Beachwood. Although Gilmour was unable to earn a team victory for any of these matches, several highlights occurred.

Against Laurel, Ava Moe '22 had an excellent showing, taking the second set before losing in a very tough 12-10 third set.

Then against higher-division Mayfield, whose roster boasts a number of tournament competitors, Isabella Martin '22 showed true grit after a first-set loss to come back and win the second set 7-5. Doubles partners Claire Jablonski '21 and Hadley Hairston '21 also battled to a third set after taking the first set 6-4.

Coach Cyndi Smith described the doubles performance against Mayfield as "great teamwork both at the net and from the baseline."

The final match of the week against Beachwood saw Maggie Grunden '21 (pictured on the right) and Lauren Kastelic '22 (pictured on the left) team up for the only win of the match with a straight set 6-1, 6-3 victory. "Lauren did an excellent job driving the ball deep and setting up Maggie for put-aways at the net," said Smith.
