Gilmour Wins 18th Straight District Title

The Gilmour Academy girls track and field team extended one of the more noteworthy accomplishments in program history as the team opened action in the postseason this past week.

Gilmour won the Bedford District title with 168.5 points, more than 50 points clear of the runner-up at the meet. With the victory, the Lancers won their 18th consecutive district title, a streak that began in 2003.

Gilmour won district titles in five events—four individual and one relay—and qualified at least one entry for the OHSAA Regional meet in 16 of the 17 events by virtue of its finishes at districts.

Amy Weybrecht '24 led the way for the Lancers with standout performances in her debut postseason track meet.

Weybrecht won both the 800 meters and the 1600 meters in the span of under an hour on a warm Saturday at Bearcat Stadium. She began by winning the mile in 5:21.30 and followed that up by crossing the line first in the 800 in 2:18.47.

In both individual races that Weybrecht won, Gilmour also took second place as well. In the 800, Mary Lombardo '22 was the runner-up (2:22.51) while Mia Polisena '22 took second place in the 1600 (5:28.04).

Weybrecht, Polisena and Lombardo ran the final three legs of Gilmour's winning 4x800 meter relay team. Clare Valenza '23 ran the opening leg for GA as the quartet won the race going away, finishing in 9:42.61.

Valenza won the lone individual event she entered to help the Lancers sweep the distance events. She won the 3200 meters in 11:54.17 while teammate Anna Grossner '24 took second in 12:30.07.

Karah Henderson '22 rounded out Gilmour's district champions. She cruised to the win in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing in 15.09 seconds. Edith Tomasek '23 was the runner-up in the 100 hurdles (16.76) and took third in the 300 hurdles (51.68).

Mariyah Moore '24 was the runner-up in both of the shorter sprinting events. She finished the 100 meters in 12.72 seconds and stopped the clock in the 200 meters in 26.99 seconds. Kai Logan '22 also scored in the 200 by finishing in sixth place for Gilmour (28.42).

Kaleigh McNamara '22 posted a third-place finish in the 400 meters as she finished in 1:01.93.

Mackenzie Palinski '21 led the way in the field events for the Lancers, qualifying for regionals in both throwing events. She took third in both the shot put and discus, posting distances of 37 feet, 1.75 inches and 118 feet, 9 inches.

Jayla Pleasant '22 just missed qualifying for regionals in the throwing events, but she scored points nonetheless. She was fifth in both the shot put (31 feet, 4.25 inches) and the discus (92 feet, 8 inches).

Bella Lasecki '22 and Brinn MacLellan '21 each qualified for regionals in a field event as well. Lasecki was third in the pole vault with a mark of 9 feet, 0 inches while MacLellan was fourth in the high jump with a height of 4 feet, 9 inches. Jazminn Bremer '24 also scored in the high jump by clearing a height of 4 feet, 4 inches.

Gilmour would add runner-up showings in each of the three shortest relays contested. The Lancers combined to finish the 4x100 in 51.36 seconds, they stopped the clock in the 4x200 in 1:47.24 and closed the meet by posting a time of 4:13.43 in the 4x400.

All the Lancers who advanced will continue their seasons by heading to the Lexington Regional, a two-day meet to be held in the final week of May.
