Five Lancers Named News Herald All-Stars

Five members of the Gilmour Academy boys and girls track and field programs were named News Herald All-Stars as the organization recently unveiled its postseason honorees.

Amy Weybrecht '24, a newly crowned state champion, led the way by earning First Team honors. Karah Henderson '22 claimed a Second Team spot while Mackenzie Palinski '21 earned a spot on the Third Team. Both CJ Johnson '22 and Mariyah Moore '24 were Honor Roll recipients.

Weybrecht concluded a fantastic freshman year by winning an individual state title at the OHSAA Division II State Championship. She won the 800-meter run with an amazing, come-from-behind effort. Weybrecht's winning time of 2:13.48, less than one-tenth of one second ahead of the runner-up, was a new personal best.

Weybrecht also ran on a pair of relays at the state championships. She helped the 4x400 squad finish fifth in the state while the 4x800 relay posted a ninth-place showing.

Henderson was the state runner-up in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing in a time of 15.22 seconds. She had previously won the Bedford District and Lexington Regional titles in the event. Henderson also ran on Gilmour's 4x100 relay that took fourth in the state. The Lancers took over two seconds off their time from their postseason debut to the end of the season as they finished in 49.33 seconds in the state finals.

Palinski claimed a 10th place finish in the state championship in the shot put with a mark of 37 feet, 8 inches. She also qualified for the regional meet in the discus after a fling of 118 feet, 9 inches in the district meet.

Johnson also posted a 10th place showing in the shot put at the state meet, registering a mark of 49 feet, 6.5 inches. He had posted a new personal-best mark of 52 feet, 3.25 inches at the Massillon Perry Regional meet. Johnson also had qualified for regionals in the discus, where he notched a mark of 110 feet, 6 inches in wet conditions.

Moore helped both Gilmour's 4x100 and 4x400 relays to top-five finishes at the state meet in season-best times. She just missed qualifying for the state championship in the 100-meter dash, finishing fifth at the regional meet in 13.22 seconds. Moore also helped GA's 4x200 relay score at the regional meet and was the district runner-up in the 200-meter dash.

With Weybrecht leading the way, the Gilmour girls finished in a tie for fourth place in the state championship team standings with 27 points. It was the best showing for the program at the state meet since a runner-up showing in 2010.
