Gilmour Takes Fourth at State Championship

The Gilmour Academy girls cross country team finished in fourth place at the OHSAA State Championship on a chilly morning this past Saturday at Fortress Obetz in suburban Columbus, Ohio.

While Gilmour was making its 12th consecutive appearance at the event, the fourth-place finish marked the best by the Lancers since 2016.

Amy Weybrecht '24 and Clare Valenza '23 led GA as both earned All-Ohio honors by virtue of their finishes.

Weybrecht placed 16th at the State meet (19:00.2), with Valenza following right behind in 17th place (19:00.3).

It marked the second consecutive All-Ohio honor for Weybrecht while Valenza, incredibly, claimed the recognition in her first year competing in the sport. Their efforts made this the first time in school history in which two Lancers were named All-Ohio in the same season.

Mary Lombardo '22 was the third Lancer across the line in her final GA cross country race. She took 66th place in 20:12.3.

Gia Rosko '24 (20:43.7) and Mia Polisena '22 (20:59.3) rounded out the scoring contingent for Gilmour, placing 99th and 110th, respectively.

Kaitlin Rulison '23 and Anna Grossner '24 also competed in the meet for Gilmour, finishing in 21:17.4 and 21:31.2.

While Gilmour's success on the course this season was impressive, the team's achievements in the classroom were also notable.

For the first time in program history, all seven runners from Gilmour's State-competing team were named Academic All-Ohio. Honorees must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.50 on an unweighted scale and compete at the OHSAA State Championship.

This was the 17th appearance in the State Championship in Gilmour's history, all of which have occurred since 2001.

Lombardo and Polisena are set to graduate from Gilmour next spring, but the five remaining Lancers will look to make a repeat run to the State Championship next fall.
